Economic transition — AS & A Level Geography (9696) questions by topic
Economic transition questions describe the distribution of high-income countries on a world map, assess whether physical factors cause regional disparities within a named country, and weigh whether regional divergence always gives way to convergence over time. Explain, describe, assess, how far and evaluate are the command words, and assess wants relative importance judged and justified, not just factors listed.
45 real questions from 2023 to 2025 papers form this page, worth 10 to 20 marks. Because regional-disparity essays are marked on linking named theory such as core-periphery models to specific countries, submitting full drafts for instant marking shows whether your theoretical grounding is applied precisely or left as background reading.
What examiners look for
- A recurring mistake is misreading a graph by not understanding that shares are proportions rather than totals from zero, and explaining reasons for a pattern instead of reasons for the changes shown to proportions over time.
- Examiners also flag treating low-income and high-income countries as separate entities instead of comparing them, and importing content about tourism, aid or debt without linking it back to the globalisation of economic activity.
- Strong answers used theoretical concepts such as core and periphery, cumulative causation, and spread and backwash effects, linking them directly to the question.
- Reports praise candidates who used specific knowledge of at least one country and two contrasting regions to address divergence and convergence, drawing on examples such as Brazil, Canada, China or the UK.
