State, identify and explain are the top command words, with complete and predict used where a trend down a group must be reasoned out rather than simply read off. Because Group VII colour and reactivity trends are frequently confused, work through the classification questions here and submit for instant marking, so any mixed-up element or colour is corrected before the same trend resurfaces in a later question.
What examiners look for
- Examiners repeatedly found candidates thought the halogens form covalent molecules with metals.
- A recurring criticism is that 37 was a popular but incorrect suggestion for both proton and neutron number.
- Cathode was a more popular answer than the correct response, anode, and the colour of chlorine gas was not well known.
- Few candidates knew that the Group VII elements are collectively called the halogens, and a chemical test in this area was often not attempted at all.
- Some candidates showed partial knowledge of diffusion without explicitly referring to diffusion in their answer.
