Tracing labelled structures on male and female reproductive system diagrams, explaining why a farmer digs soil to create air spaces before planting seeds, and naming the two words used for an unpaired-chromosome sperm structure are the tasks behind the 13 reproduction questions from 2023 and 2024, worth 8 to 12 marks.
State, describe and identify lead the command words, with complete and draw used for structural detail. Because diagram-labelling questions here often confuse similarly named structures, practise them and submit for instant marking, so any mixed-up part, such as the site of implantation, is caught immediately rather than costing marks across several linked labels.
What examiners look for
- A recurring criticism is that phototropism was sometimes confused with photosynthesis.
- Examiners note cuticle and palisade were not well known terms.
- The ovum was often not recognised as the female gamete; ovary and ovule were frequently offered instead.
- Some candidates labelled structures found in plant cells where human structures were required, and a few confused embryo with zygote.
- Strong answers, according to the reports, correctly identified that seeds without water failed to germinate, and the uterus was well known as the site of embryo implantation.
