Transport in plants — AS & A Level Biology (9700) questions by topic
Root and stem cross-sections, xylem structure and transpiration factors run through this A Level topic: drawing a plan diagram of tissue layers in a root, naming the elongated lignified cell type seen in an electron micrograph, and explaining how leaf vapour pressure deficit affects transpiration rate. Draw, calculate and explain lead the command words, and draw specifically wants accurate proportions and joined outlines, not just labelled shapes.
This large set holds 91 real questions from 2023 to 2025 papers, worth 1 to 20 marks, so scale-bar calculations sit beside full plan-diagram drawing tasks. Practising drawings and calculations with instant marking is especially useful here, since an unmeasured scale bar or a mislabelled xylem cell type is caught before it costs marks across a whole diagram.
What examiners look for
- Plan diagrams often lose marks where lines do not meet up precisely, or where all xylem vessel elements are drawn the same size.
- A frequent gap forgets to measure the scale bar, leaving the actual root diameter uncalculated.
- Naming the lignified, dead cell type seen in a stem electron micrograph produces a wide range of incorrect answers, including sclerenchyma, xylem cells and sieve tube elements.
- Adhesion of water to lignin is only credited when linked specifically to lignin's hydrophilic parts, not lignin generally.
- Strong answers draw at least four tissue layers with thin continuous lines using most of the available space, and correctly measure both the scale bar and the feature being calculated before combining them.
