Cell structure — AS & A Level Biology (9700) questions by topic
At 98 real questions drawn from 2023 to 2025 papers, this is the largest set in the syllabus, worth 1 to 14 marks, so magnification arithmetic sits beside full explanations of receptor-driven cell division. Converting micrometres to nanometres for an electron micrograph, distinguishing structures found in both prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells, and explaining the cellular consequences of uncontrolled cell division recur throughout, with calculate, explain and identify the leading command words.

What examiners look for
- A recurring error draws a textbook fluid-mosaic membrane rather than the structure actually shown in the given figure.
- Double-membrane structures are sometimes drawn as a single membrane where two adjacent membranes are shown.
- The term mitogen is frequently confused with mutation.
- Answers on uncontrolled cell division sometimes discuss tumours or cancer generally rather than the specific consequences for the target cells.
- Strong answers focus on target-cell consequences such as uncontrolled division, note that limited receptor numbers can restrict the response, and correctly convert units at every stage of a magnification calculation.
