The world around us questions ask you to identify what a television advert is for from a set of pictures, match statements about the outdoors, such as enjoying a walk or noticing birds, to the correct image, complete a technology-use survey form in Spanish, and choose the correct statement about a speaker's blog. Identify, answer, match, complete and write test both recognising vocabulary about nature and technology and producing accurate short written responses.
20 questions from 2023 to 2025 sit on this page, worth between 1 and 12 marks. Because comprehension answers here must be adapted rather than lifted, submitting a drafted response for instant marking checks whether whole sentences have been copied straight from the source text in the first person, which invalidates an answer, rather than being expressed independently.
What examiners look for
- A recurring criticism is lifting whole sentences from the source text, often left in the first person, which included inappropriate information and invalidated the answer.
- Examiners note a frequent wrong answer confusing two options about geography, since the correct option concerned a coastal detail rather than mountains inland.
- Reports flag mismatches between infinitive and conjugated verb forms, for example answering 'mirar mensajes' when the question 'What does he read?' required a form matching that specific verb.
- Strong answers, according to the reports, drew on a wide range of vocabulary and knowledge of synonyms to process every condition and find the best-fit option for each person described.
- Examiners praise responses that correctly changed the possessive 'mi' to 'su' and shifted first-person verbs to third person where the task required it.
