School and education — IGCSE Spanish - Foreign Language (0530) questions by topic
School and education questions ask you to choose the correct statement about where a school is located or how a character views their classmates, answer comprehension questions on a text about a student studying from a tree with verbs manipulated into the third person, and match pictures of classroom items such as an eraser or a pencil case to descriptions. Choose, match, answer and write test both close reading and producing connected, tense-accurate prose about school life.
This is a compact set of just 6 questions from the 2023 to 2024 papers, worth between 5 and 12 marks. Because a personal-description task here specifically asks for physical appearance rather than character, submitting a drafted answer for instant marking flags whether the response has stayed on the required focus and used correct verb forms rather than defaulting to infinitives.
What examiners look for
- A recurring criticism is describing a teacher's character rather than physical appearance when the task specifically asked for appearance.
- Examiners note that weaker candidates relied on infinitives or the wrong tense, and struggled with gender agreement in their descriptions.
- Strong answers, according to the reports, worked through the tasks methodically in order, used accurate verbs throughout, and included connectors beyond the basic y, o and pero, such as 'sin embargo', 'además' and 'mientras'.
- Reports praise responses that used correct conjugations of 'ser' and 'tener' to build a description, such as 'Mi profesor favorito es alto con pelo negro'.
