Materials — IGCSE Design & Technology (0445) questions by topic
Materials questions in Design and Technology span naming timbers, plastics and metals, sketching a former for bending acrylic, and reading grain direction from a diagram, with marks from as little as 1 up to 25 depending on the part. This page brings together 95 real questions from 2023 to 2025 papers, by far the most heavily tested area in the set.
Name, sketch and state are the command words to watch: name and state require a precise technical term rather than a description, while sketch expects a recognisable, correctly proportioned drawing. Practise the recall-heavy questions in short bursts and submit each response for instant marking, since naming errors and half-remembered joint types are exactly what examiners flag as lost marks.
What examiners look for
- A recurring criticism is candidates confusing grain types, with only a minority correctly recognising both end and short grain.
- Examiners note more candidates could name a cold chisel correctly than could identify tinsnips or shears.
- Many candidates were unfamiliar with the term biodegradable, according to the reports.
- Strong answers named welding or brazing correctly, and drew a butt hinge with two leaves and two or three screw holes in each leaf.
- Reports praise candidates who showed additional corner blocks, a recognised knock-down fitting, or dowels with pin-and-glue or screw-and-glue joints.
