Working drawings and graphics — AS & A Level Design And Technology (9705) questions by topic
Working drawings and graphics questions ask you to draw a planometric view of an interior with wall sections removed, describe processes for producing a batch number on graphic products such as a T-shirt, and explain terms like demographics alongside strategies such as discounting. Explain and discuss cover the written reasoning, while draw and state direct the technical drawing and short factual answers.
23 questions from 2023 to 2025 sit here, worth from 10 up to 80 marks. Because orthographic and isometric drawings are marked on scale accuracy and correct construction, submitting a drawing for instant marking flags a wrongly scaled elevation or misaligned exploded view early, rather than only once the whole drawing has been completed and marked as a unit.
What examiners look for
- A recurring criticism is that candidates named drawing types without going on to explain how and why they would be used in a design situation.
- Examiners note that relevant supporting examples, such as specific exhibition features or product-security methods, were not always included.
- Reports praise responses that clearly explained the benefits of freehand sketching, most often citing speed and ease of modification.
- Strong answers, according to the reports, used correct construction methods to complete elevations accurately and drew the plan to the correct scale for a pipe intersection.
- Outstanding responses aligned parts accurately in an exploded isometric drawing and applied thick and thin line technique well.
