Materials — AS & A Level Design And Technology (9705) questions by topic
Materials questions cover selecting and justifying real material choices, such as why MDF suits an adjustable table, why recycled card was chosen for packaging, or why plywood's perpendicular veneers make it stable enough for a given product. Describe, explain and discuss want reasoned points tied to a named material's properties, while state and give test shorter factual answers about processes or finishes.
28 questions from 2023 to 2025 sit on this page, worth between 10 and 20 marks. Because material-choice answers are marked on feasibility as much as correctness, submitting a justification for instant marking flags quickly whether a suggested material or process, such as centre-lathe turning or sand casting, would actually work for the scale and setting described in the question.
What examiners look for
- A recurring criticism is that answers omitted key details, such as a double-wall aspect, safety precautions, or a feasible method of connecting a cover to packaging.
- Examiners note that some candidates named an unsuitable material for a task, for example suggesting MDF for a shelf support meant to hold the weight of books.
- Reports flag that single-word reasons for a material choice could not be awarded full credit; a developed reason was needed.
- Strong answers, according to the reports, clearly explained why a specific material such as MDF, recycled card or plywood had been chosen, often citing environmental benefit or structural stability.
- Candidates who scored well described marking out and cutting a development net in detail, including tools, equipment and safety precautions.
