Business and its environment — AS & A Level Business (9609) questions by topic
Takeovers, business sectors, intrapreneurship and the effects of stakeholder conflict make up this topic, tested across 54 real questions from 2023 to 2025 papers, worth between 5 and 30 marks.
Define and identify want a precise term or example, while analyse and evaluate on the case-study parts reward applying named qualities or factors directly to the business in the case, with a concluding judgement placed in that specific context rather than as a generic closing line. Because reports flag evaluations opened with a bare one-line recommendation and no evidence, drafting a response that builds the judgement from analysis first and submitting it for instant marking directly tests that ordering.
What examiners look for
- A recurring criticism is candidates trying to start an answer with their recommendation or evaluation as a simple one-line statement, before any evidence or analysis, capping the mark at 1.
- Examiners repeatedly note a significant majority not understanding what an overdraft actually is, confusing it with long-term rather than short-term borrowing.
- Reports flag generic answers such as 'allows a business to start trading' that show no understanding specific to the term being tested.
- Strong answers recognise that intrapreneurs are employees developing innovative ideas within a business, needing qualities such as creativity, resilience and risk taking, each applied with its own analysis of impact.
- Strong responses build a reason, application, impact and outcome structure, attaching a specific piece of case data to each creditable mark rather than leaving analysis unattached to evidence.
