Prose — IGCSE English - Literature In English (0475) questions by topic
Novels such as Purple Hibiscus, Picnic at Hanging Rock and Rebecca are tested through extract-based questions on vivid or entertaining moments and whole-text essays, with 210 real questions across 2023 to 2025 papers, each worth 25 marks.
How and in what ways dominate the extract questions, asking how a writer makes a specific moment work, while explore and analyse on the essay questions need sustained engagement with relationships or characters across the whole novel rather than description and assertion. Because the reports single out responses that placed an extract firmly in context as the strongest, drafting an extract answer and marking it instantly checks whether that context has actually been supplied.
What examiners look for
- Strong answers place the extract securely in context, engage deeply with the text and appreciate exactly how tension is created.
- Strong responses explore the significance of specific images, such as a red cloud or the sacred nature of a rock, and how they add to the effect being asked about.
- Strong answers on narrative perspective show a clear understanding of how a first-person narrator's fears and bias shape the presentation of other characters and the reader's understanding of them.
- Strong responses offer personal and evaluative engagement with a key word from the question, such as 'entertaining', commenting on how a naive first-person perspective shapes the humour.
