Sign matching — IGCSE Arabic - Foreign Language (0544) questions by topic
Public signs are the whole game here: candidates match short Arabic notices about sending money to relatives, eating in a garden, buying coffee and juice, or finding services, against the correct picture or location, so vocabulary for everyday places has to be instantly recognisable.
Identify is the only command word tested, worth 5 marks per question, and this page collects 9 real questions from papers set between 2023 and 2025. Because every mark rides on spotting one correct sign, practise scanning each notice for its core noun quickly, then use instant marking to see whether a missed match traces back to a specific vocabulary gap rather than a careless read.
What examiners look for
- Examiners repeatedly found candidates missing the ATM sign because they did not recognise المال and النقود as synonyms for money.
- A recurring criticism is that candidates could not identify the lost-property office sign, suggesting they had not learned vocabulary for public-place signage.
- Reports recommend building recognition of synonym pairs for everyday nouns like money, since either word can appear on a genuine sign.
