Reading comprehension — IGCSE Arabic - Foreign Language (0544) questions by topic
Reading comprehension moves from picking a missing word in a sentence about visiting Britain, to answering short questions in Arabic about who attended a festival or why a father drove his daughter to university, so both selecting and producing accurate Arabic are tested.
Answer, identify, state, give and explain lead the command words, worth between 7 and 12 marks, across 27 questions from 2023 to 2025 papers. Because higher-mark answers require rephrasing text rather than lifting it, practise converting first-person text into concise third-person answers, then use instant marking to check whether your phrasing counted as manipulation or as a direct lift.
What examiners look for
- Examiners repeatedly found language manipulation used ineffectively, with good answers needing to recognise مسؤول (responsible) and تقييم (evaluation) as the key words in the text.
- A recurring criticism is that the two-mark questions requiring language manipulation proved most challenging, while other questions demanded precise information instead.
- Strong answers, according to the reports, manipulated the language into the third person and answered concisely and directly rather than lifting straight from the text.
