The Hadith and Sunna of the Prophet — IGCSE Islamiyat (0493) questions by topic
The four set Hadiths and their guidance for Muslim belief and communal life form this topic, tested through 18 real questions from 2023 to 2025 papers, worth between 8 and 14 marks.
Describe on part (a) wants the teaching of a chosen Hadith explained in your own words, while evaluate on part (b) is about how that teaching is put into action, a distinction the reports say is frequently blurred. Drafting both parts separately and submitting them for instant marking exposes whether a response has paraphrased the given translation rather than drawing out the essence of the teaching, a repeated source of lost marks.
What examiners look for
- A recurring criticism is paraphrasing the given translation of a Hadith, notably Hadiths 19 and 5, rather than bringing out the essence of the teaching.
- Examiners repeatedly note writing about the importance of the Hadiths instead of how their teachings can be put into action, which part (b) actually requires.
- Reports flag not picking out the key word or phrase of the Hadith, such as 'strives in the way of Allah' or 'sincerity', and explaining it.
- Strong answers refer to several set Hadiths by name and show how each guides Muslims and benefits them both personally and communally.
- Strong responses on the collectors of Hadith describe the components and classifications and show the relationship between them, for example how isnad and matn together verify authenticity.
