Sources and recording of data — IGCSE Accounting (0985) questions by topic
Sources and recording of data covers interpreting a credit balance on a purchases ledger account, recording a trader's transactions such as payments and settlement discounts, identifying correct statements about year-end ledger transfers, and reading a ledger account to determine what happened between two parties. Find, identify, calculate, complete and state are the top command words, so precise reading of double-entry direction matters throughout.
Marks range from 1 to 20 across the 15 real questions here, from 2023 to 2025 papers. Because trade discounts and opening balances feed directly into later totals, submit your entries for instant marking to catch a discount left undeducted or an opening balance omitted before it distorts the whole account.
What examiners look for
- A recurring criticism is trade discounts not being deducted before an entry was recorded, producing a figure such as $20 instead of the correct $18.
- Examiners note narratives for journal entries needing to be an account name such as the sales account, with missing dates or vague descriptions both marked down.
- A common mistake was labelling sales as purchases with figures reversed, or omitting an opening balance brought down of $450 or showing it as a credit balance instead.
- Reports flag posting individual invoices and credit notes directly into a control account instead of using journal totals, and bank payments left untotalled with discount allowed or irrecoverable debts omitted.
