Vocabulary and usage — AS & A Level Urdu (9686) questions by topic
Vocabulary and usage asks you to use given words, such as tanhai meaning solitude or himmat meaning courage, in your own original sentences that make their meaning clear. Express is the single command word tested, and every sentence must demonstrate understanding of the word rather than simply place it in a grammatically correct line.
Marks are fixed at 5 across the 5 real questions on this page, from papers set between 2023 and 2025. What examiners look for
- Examiners note that copying a sentence directly from the passage meant the mark could not be awarded, even when the sentence was grammatically correct.
- A recurring criticism is confusion over specific words, such as using maqbooliyat to mean fame rather than popularity, or misunderstanding the meaning of qadeem or zabani.
- Reports flag candidates using zaban, meaning language, where zabani was required, and confusing iqdamat with intizamat, meaning arrangements.
- Strong answers demonstrated a clear understanding of the word's meaning and constructed an appropriate original sentence around it, securing good marks.
