How AS & A Level Thinking Skills is really marked
Thinking Skills is marked across twelve papers, and the overall balance in our bank is 727 point-marked questions to 320 calculation questions, with a much smaller 24 pure-levels and 15 points-with-levels. The calculation share is unusually high for a subject that isn't maths — problem-solving papers (11, 12, 13, 31, 32, 33) are dense with numerical puzzles, logic grids and multi-step arithmetic, where you get credit for the reasoning path as well as the final figure.
The points-marked questions dominate the critical-thinking papers (21, 22, 23) and the applied-reasoning papers (41, 42, 43): these ask you to identify a conclusion, spot a flaw, or explain why a piece of evidence is or isn't significant, and each mark corresponds to a specific, nameable point the mark scheme is looking for. Precision in the vocabulary of argument — conclusion, reason, assumption, counter-argument — matters here because the mark scheme distinguishes between them exactly.
A small pure-levels and points-with-levels component (mainly in papers 21–23 and 41–43) asks for a short piece of extended reasoning or evaluation, where the examiner judges overall quality rather than ticking off separate points — but this is a minority of the marks available.
Because so much of the subject rewards showing your working — whether that's an arithmetic method or the logical steps that get you from evidence to conclusion — the biggest single differentiator between candidates isn't cleverness but whether the reasoning is written down at all.
Where candidates actually lose marks
- On a logical-deduction question, many candidates offer comments about likelihood or plausibility instead of a deduction that follows necessarily from the given data — the question asks how to deduce, not how likely something is. (try the question)
- On a multi-constraint scheduling problem, candidates miss valid combinations — usually the four sessions of one activity or a particular three-activity combination — and some forget that the total spend must come to exactly the stated amount. (try the question)
- Asked to identify the main conclusion of an argument, candidates wrongly pick the first sentence, confuse 'conclusion' with 'claim', or judge whether something is an argument using the everyday sense of the word rather than the technical one. (try the question)
- Asked why a source is significant to a claim, candidates answer in terms of how reliable the source is rather than how significant it is to the specific claim — these are different questions and only one is being asked. (try the question)
- On a counting/arrangements problem, the most common wrong answer given is 4 arrangements, with 2, 3, 6, 12 and 16 also common — showing candidates are guessing at a plausible number rather than working systematically through the possibilities. (try the question)
- On a distance/rate word problem, candidates misidentify who is doing which part of a journey, incorrectly concluding the wrong person is driving because of a misread time calculation. (try the question)
- Asked to identify a counter-argument, roughly a third of candidates score, because many give only a counter assertion (a bare opposing claim) rather than a full counter argument with both a reason and a conclusion. (try the question)
- On a cost-optimisation problem, candidates find the cheapest two-item combination but fail to check whether a three-item combination could be even cheaper. (try the question)

How to revise with past papers
Because so many marks in the problem-solving papers are for calculation, always write out your working in full when practising past papers, even when you're confident of the answer — it's the only way to check afterwards whether a wrong final figure came from a small slip or a wrong method, and mark schemes for this subject often credit method separately from the final answer.
For the critical-thinking and applied-reasoning papers, drill the vocabulary of argument (conclusion, reason, claim, assumption, counter-argument, flaw) until you use each term precisely — a large share of marks lost in this subject come from candidates using the wrong term for the right idea, not from missing the idea entirely.
Practise timing separately for the numerical and reasoning sections of a paper, since they demand different kinds of thinking — rushing a logic problem to save time for an essay-style answer (or vice versa) is a generic risk worth planning for explicitly.
