Media contexts — AS & A Level Media Studies (9607) questions by topic
Media contexts questions ask you to evaluate whether audiences are created rather than discovered, explain factors that influence production for a new company, or discuss how far audiences are more powerful than institutions, always applied to a specific media area you have studied. Explain, to what extent, how far, evaluate and analyse are the top command words, and each expects sustained reference to industry and audience concepts rather than a single media area asserted without evidence.
Marks are set at 25, and this page draws on 14 real questions from papers set in 2023 and 2024. Because the reports flag misunderstandings about audience activity as a recent phenomenon, draft your essays and submit them for instant marking to check your grasp of concepts like convergence and prosumerism against a genuinely wide range of case studies.
What examiners look for
- A recurring criticism, noted repeatedly, is misunderstanding the concept of 'active' audiences by presuming it is a much more recent development tied only to technologies such as online streaming.
- Examiners note candidates presenting information from only two or three case studies, which limited the depth of the response, and some offering a generalised overview rather than demonstrating knowledge of key concepts and critical debates.
- Strong answers discussed media consumption in relation to audience concepts through both theory and industry examples, covering individualism, niche interests and prosumerism.
- Reports praise responses that developed a critical engagement with convergence within at least one media area, linking cost-effective technology use to higher quality production and increased audience awareness and profits.
