Drama — AS & A Level Literature in English (9695) questions by topic
Plays by Shelagh Stephenson, Wole Soyinka and Tom Stoppard are examined through extract-based commentary and essays on dramatic method, drawn from 93 real questions set in 2023 to 2025 papers, all worth 50 marks.
In what ways, discuss and how far ask you to move beyond character summary to analyse language, symbols and staging, and reports repeatedly note answers that keep characters as the sole focus without reaching that analysis. Because context confusion is a named weakness here, drafting an extract-based response and marking it instantly is a quick check that the specific moment in the play has been correctly identified before analysis begins.
What examiners look for
- A recurring criticism is taking each main character in turn to consider a single quality, keeping characters as the sole focus without moving to analysis of the writer's methods.
- Examiners repeatedly note being unsure of the specific context to a passage, leading to insecure or misplaced responses.
- Reports flag drifting away from the passage to discuss the wider play without close reference to the extract itself.
- Strong answers move beyond character to consider language, imagery, symbols and contrasting settings, showing how the writer shapes the audience's attitude through what is said and done.
- Strong responses discriminate between characters through their attitudes, treating a shared theme such as work as a method of characterisation across several figures.
