Databases questions range from single-step tasks to full builds: creating a data entry form for a stock table, calculating how account numbers are structured and validated, describing normalisation for a book collection database, and building a relational database to third normal form from several linked source files.
Marks stretch unusually wide, from 4 to 65, across draw, describe, explain, calculate and compare. 16 real questions from 2023 and 2024 papers sit here. Because a single missed one-to-many relationship or duplicate field can undermine a whole normalised structure, submitting a build for instant marking flags the exact table or field that needs refining before the rest of the task compounds the error.
What examiners look for
- A recurring criticism is producing only three tables from three source files without spotting duplicate data that needed refining into further tables with one-to-many relationships.
- Examiners repeatedly note candidates trying to combine data in a spreadsheet rather than importing it into a database, which cannot create a valid mail-merge source.
- Reports flag queries that restricted cars correctly by year but missed wildcard searches for features like LED lighting or colour, giving the wrong record count.
- A common error is keeping file prefixes or using spaces in table and field names, against what a working database structure requires.
- Strong answers identified all five tables needed to reach third normal form, set appropriate field lengths throughout, and exported a polished report with the required candidate details and exact record count.
