English in the world — AS & A Level English Language (9093) questions by topic
English in the world questions give you a single stimulus text, such as a 2021 business-website article or a Guardian piece from 2020, and ask you to discuss the most important issues it raises about English changing status internationally. Discuss is the only command word tested, so the demand is entirely about which issues you select and how fully you develop them, across a full 25-mark essay.
16 questions from 2023 to 2025 make up this page. Because marks reward creative development of ideas over simply working through the text in order, drafting a response and submitting it for instant marking shows whether your argument has moved beyond restating the text's paragraphs and toward original commentary on the present and future status of English.
What examiners look for
- A recurring criticism is responses using only a minimum of the available discussion points, or presenting material not directly related to the specific focus of the question.
- Examiners note that working through each point in the order it appeared in the text, with only basic development or paraphrase, limits a response's range.
- Reports flag that analysing the stimulus material's writing style is not required for this paper and risks producing irrelevant, non-rewardable content.
- Strong answers, according to the reports, provided a sustained discursive essay with full commentary on the writer's arguments, developed by thoughtful counterarguments.
- Examiners praise responses structured in a logical, fluent sequence of developed ideas, with an introduction tied to the text and a conclusion that reinforced a clear linguistic standpoint.
