The macroeconomy — AS & A Level Economics (9708) questions by topic
Unemployment types, inflation, the circular flow of income and production possibility curves anchor this macroeconomics topic, drawn from 266 questions set in 2023 to 2025 papers and marked from 1 up to 20.
Identify and calculate questions test whether you can classify a scenario correctly (cyclical versus structural unemployment, for instance), while assess and evaluate push you to judge how far AD-side or supply-side policy actually reduces a named problem. This page rewards drafting full data-response answers and checking each against the mark scheme instantly, since misreading which curve should shift, or which axis label to use, is a repeated source of lost marks here.
What examiners look for
- A recurring criticism is candidates simply stating that figures were negative, which merely copies the data and misses the first mark.
- Examiners repeatedly note the PPC shifted left instead of shown as a movement to a point within the curve when resources such as labour are unused, which only earns 1 mark.
- Reports flag axes labelled incorrectly, most often with P and Q, producing an inaccurate diagram.
- Strong answers draw an accurate PPC with the movement to a point inside the curve; roughly half of candidates achieved full marks on this.
- Strong responses link the type of unemployment to whether AD-side policy or supply-side policy is the better option, since this choice determines the level of marks awarded.
